Mount Tamalpais, just minutes north of San Francisco, provides excellent hiking opportunities and an easy escape from the city. Campbell Grading, Inc., decommissioned an old fire road that went down the fall line of the ridge. The road was massively eroded, with 4-foot-deep gullies at some points and sediment freely flowing into the Pacific Ocean.
In decommissioning the road, we installed erosion control materials to prevent future sediment migration. We converted part of the road to a trail, leaving a smaller footprint on the land. We also cut a fresh trail that followed the natural geographic contours.
