The Lands End restoration and trail project focused on construction of a new outdoor accessible trail system that allows visitors to arrive just above the Sutro Baths and follow the accessible trail out to Mile Rock Overlook.
The trail system that Campbell Grading, Inc., built is over 1.5 miles long and varies in width from 8 feet to 14 feet along a historic narrow-gauge railroad track corridor. The project area consists mainly of vegetation-covered sand dunes and cypress trees; it contains many sensitive and endangered plants and known archeological sites.
As a part of this project, we decommissioned several hundred feet of social trails, using Barth Campbell’s proven technique of stabilizing the sand dunes with salvaged logs as soil dams.
In 2010 and 2011, Campbell Grading, Inc., was invited back out to do more work at Lands End. We built the Batteries to Bluffs Trail, which required construction over extremely rough terrain. We used a helicopter to shuttle all materials down onto the bluff, including 37 bundles of timbers weighing 2 tons pounds each and 300 tons of rock. We used these materials to build box steps, stringer steps, and boardwalks and to surface the trail.
The Batteries to Bluffs Trail received the Lands End revitalization San Francisco Beautiful Award in 2010.
