For the Golden Gate National Recreation Area
San Francisco, CA
Completed: 2006
The Lands End trail and restoration project focused on constructing a new outdoor accessible trail system that would provide visitors with the unique experience of being able to arrive just above the Sutro Baths then follow the accessible trail out to Mile Rock Overlook.
As a part of this project, we decommissioned several hundred feet of social trails. Campbell Grading Inc. used Barth Campbell's technique of stabilizing the sand dunes with salvaged logs as dams. The soil dam construction is a proven technique used on many of our projects in the State and County Parks and for the California Department of Fish and Game.
The project area is intertwined with endangered plants and known archeological sites. The geology consisted mainly of sand dunes. The trail system is over one and a half miles long and varied from eight feet to fourteen feet in width.
In 2010 and 2011, Campbell Grading Inc. was invited back out to do more work at Lands End. This work included construction stairs and bridges in the newly constructed parking lot and overlook (completed by others).
Land's End revitalization was the winner of the 2010 San Francisco Beautiful Award.
